Return of the Giants! Humpback Whales
March 22, 2014 10:30 am
Jackie Hildering has had the extraordinary privilege of documenting the return of humpback whales to NE Vancouver Island. As a researcher with the Marine Education and Research Society, she will share the work done by MERS to understand the feeding strategies of humpbacks and the threats they face. A focus will be on how many unknowns there still are about these baleen behemoths and what this suggests with regard to the need for precaution and humility in how we manage marine resources. Jackie is the winner of the Vancouver Aquarium’s 2010 Murray A. Newman Award for Excellence in Aquatic Conservation. She’s an avid diver and as “The Marine Detective” we’re pretty sure she’ll try to sneak some pictures of marine invertebrates into her presentation too!
